What Happens to the Cleveland Cavaliers if LeBron James Leaves?

Okay, I already know what you're thinking: Oh great, another "LeBron James Will Leave When He Becomes a Free Agent in 2010" article.

Yes, I'm aware that he'll most likely re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers next summer instead of heading to either the New York Knicks or New Jersey Nets.

But, I decided to write the always fun "what if" story anyway.

If James does decide to sign elsewhere, what will happen to the Cavaliers?

That's a question Cavs fans don't even want to think about.

With the big contracts of Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilguaskas coming off the books next summer, the Cavs would have a significant amount of cap space to offer free agents like Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and Amar'e Stoudemire.

However, those guys wouldn't want to come to Cleveland.

That being said, the Cavs would immediately go from one of the top teams in the league to what they were before Lebron arrived in 2003—absolutely awful.

What, they couldn't win with a team led by holdovers Mo Williams, Delonte West, and Anderson Varejao?

Never. The only thing the Cavs would have a shot at winning is the 2011 NBA Draft Lottery.

The Cavs would have to attempt to rebuild though the draft and hope and pray that they'd land the next Tim Duncan or Chris Paul.

But, Cavs fans don't worry, LeBron isn't going anywhere.

Next summer, he'll sign an expensive contract extension as expected and remain in Ohio until the day he retires. And of course, he'll win a couple of championships along the way.

Why is Cleveland waiting to see if lebron leaves this Summer . If I was Cleveland I would trade Lebron now . He is at his peak of trade value / If he doesn't want to sign a contract extension now then they should trade him .They could get two great players for him and probably a high draft pick. He is going to be a free agent this summer . Does anybody really believe Cleveland has a Championship caliber team this year ? Not likely . So what is the situation ? Wait till the next summer where he could walk for no compensation or force his hand now and if he doesn't want to resign , Cleveland should start enquiring as to what teams would actually do to acquire James now . The free agent draft coming up in 2010 is very unpredictable / in reality who knows what's gonna happen . Cleveland has the best bargainig chip in the NBA right now who doesn't seem to truly want to commit to their team .To me now is the time to force James' hand and make him @##$%$ or get off the pot . All this stuff about him staying or leaving - Cleveland can get an answer now on that and if that answer is not to their liking make the appropriate moves. That is the correct business decision . Think about it - If Jame's doesn't want to resign who in the NBA could bring better players to any team if they were traded . He's the best bargaining chip around .Other than him who would other teams want that the Cavs have which would make the other team want to give up their own top flight player(s). I could tell you the answer to that one - No one. The best move the Cavs could make now is forcing an answer out of James . If he won't sign now trade him . He has the highest market value of any player in the NBA right now - If he isn't willing to commit to a giant contract now - business is business - this has gotta be done. Get all you can for him while he is still here.
